The Food and Drug Administration has approved one of three drugs to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), including Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Spedra, and has issued a black-market warning for such drugs. The FDA said it has no known link to the products, but the agency did not immediately respond to questions from The Associated Press.
The new warning was based on a survey of more than 100,000 American men. The results showed that Viagra, Cialis and Levitra were the most commonly prescribed drug in the United States for ED treatment, according to the FDA.
According to the most popular brand names for these drugs in the survey, they were also among the top 10 drugs prescribed for ED treatment in the United States, with more than 70 million prescriptions filled.
“I am sure the FDA will have an opportunity to review the data on Viagra and other drugs that are prescribed for ED treatment,” said Janet Woodcock, director of the agency’s Office of Criminal Investigations, in a press release. “The agency is committed to protecting patients from unnecessary and potentially dangerous drugs.”
The new warning has been issued since October, and it was approved on the same day as Pfizer’s Viagra. The drug has been prescribed for treatment of impotence in about 90 percent of the patients surveyed, according to the FDA.
A spokesman for Pfizer said the company had “received” the new label. The FDA has also requested that the drug be added to the market.
The FDA has not yet issued a black-market warning to these drugs. However, the agency said it will respond to questions from the public.
The FDA said it is evaluating the available data on the efficacy and safety of these drugs and the possible drug interactions.
The FDA said it does not know whether the drugs are associated with adverse events or drug interactions that are expected to occur when they are taken. The FDA also did not say if the drugs were used for other purposes or whether they should be stopped. The agency did not respond to questions from The Associated Press about the information.
